Evening all,
been busy building/finishing lots of pedals lately mainly 12v tube designs

But really fancy building a small tube amp
Want something to run a small 12" cab for practice
only real spec is tube, good amount of clean headroom with a nice tone when gain up got enough pedals to get the rest.
and a headphone out would be great

So far looked at
Murder 1 v7 modders delight
Tube Cricket
or something like the marshall 18w and play with turret boards

Open to options feel free to add own opinions  :icon_biggrin:

I've made both the 18W from a kit, and a GTFO preamp on turret board, with my own tweaks.

I'd consider doing the 18W TMB (treble mid bass tone stack) from a  kit as a first "big tube build", as it is a GREAT learning tool!  The kit will get you everything you will need with no guessing about ratings etc.   Not sure who is doing them now, the 18W site seems to have closed?   Search around!

Then, if you really like the 18, you're all set (well, gotta build a head cab or combo box, LOL)...and if you want more bite, you can re-do the preamp to your liking - VERY easy.  Cascading normal / TMB channels is a common and well-documented mod, as it parallel mod.

In the end I kept mine, decked it out with tolex, even built a 2x12 cab from ground up!  And that took me to where I can buy generic turret boards and whip a preamp up in short order.

I was trying to look at the 18w site but as you say it's not working tbh I would quite like to build from scratch as long as I can find a good set of build docs with layouts etc I'm confident now with schematics but it's the finding verified build docs that I'm weary of

If you want something between the Murder One (which I've built and like very much) and the 18W, how about the "WF-55" Champ-a-like from Ampmaker (UK)?  Built this one too: it's very simple, pretty loud and sounds great.  Should shift plenty of air out of a 12".  They also do a 18W clone if that's what you're really after.  The kits and instructions Barry puts together are top class.

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...

Check out trinityamp.com.  They might have something you'd like.  They do 18W kits as well as other stuff.

If you expect to be tweaking, I'd highly recommend eyelets over turrets.

Turrets have a little hole on the top for one component lead, but everything else connected to it is wrapped and soldered.  The unwrapping-while-heating part can be frustrating if you decide to change a component.  I've had them loosen and even break.  Eyelets are nearly indestructible.  Easy to pull a lead out too.

Turrets do look neat, but who's gonna see it?
