hello,

looking to replace my original weller tip which lasted nearly 3 years  but finally gave out on me. The PDF manual says ETA 1/16 but the others look good as well and i think are 1/32 and 1/64 th ..depends on website but either listed as flat or screwdriver ..are those any diff than a wedge or a chisel? i believe a wedge is fatter for more work heat?

Im doing what you guys are with normal stripboard and standard pcb boards..standard components. I loved how perfectly matched the original tip was for this type of work.

thanks!

.062" x .032" x .625" ETA

.031" x .019" x .625" ETH

.015" x .000" x .700" ETU

I not sure mine had come with a eta or other type  - cant believe a channel like colins lab/make or pace doesnt have an in depth solder tip video

Is weller made in germany or mexico , or both ?

I did this for a living before the internet, keeping WTCPNs fed and happy. We used to get the paper catalogue out, it had large line drawings of the tip profiles and sizes, and it was clear what was going on...  nowadays while it's all nice and interactive and what-you-see-is-what-you-get, they all look much the same, and important details seem to get left out...  :(

There are a few different tip profiles, but I'd suggest the screwdriver and conical tips are the most commonly used for general electronics.
screwdriver:  flats ground both sides but ground leaving a thick land between the flats at the point - like a flat screwdriver  (ETA 1.6mm/0.062" , ETH 0.8mm/0.031")
conical: conical profile coming to a relatively sharp point (slightly flattened at the tip)
single-flat: conical with a flat ground on one side only (ETU)

The screwdriver tip is the same as a chisel tip in this series  (on all-spec the ETA is a 0.062" screwdriver, and on the .au RS site it's a 1.6mm straight chisel), but some other weller series make a distinction.   I don't think I've ever seen a weller tip classed as a wedge, but intuitvely I'd guess it's a tip with a flat on one side only.

This is one of the selector sites I found:  http://www.weller-toolsus.com/soldering/tips/style-type/et-series,  Suggest you might have a look at the ETA (http://www.weller-toolsus.com/soldering/tips/weller-eta-screwdriver-tip-1-6-mm.html)  to confirm this is what you had?

Note there are tips which are longer (e.g ETO conical  and ETJ 0.8mm/0.031" screwdriver ) which I personally found gave finer control (though nowadays they'd probably just amplify the unsteadiness of my hands!).

Some RS-components SPAM that glosses over the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrTgPJa8N7E
