Recommend button offsets

What are the minimum distance from the front or side edges to locate buttons on a stomp box ... and maintain stability?

Are there any rules of thumb here?

I'm thinking a  mid-size Hammond box (approximately 3"x4") and 1.3 inches high, possibly a tad shorter or higher.
