Bought a few of these TL072CP's (bottom) recently and noticed they were housed differently than other TL072CP's I've seen...

Fake?  8)

You forgot the 2.

Yes, I think it's probably fake, not really a TI product.  But it may be a functional TL072, generic but rebranded.

Thank you, fixed the error. And thank you for the confirming what I suspected  :o

It's hard to tell because they have different date codes.  TI parts look different over time.

You would have to verify
- the logo matches the year
- that pin 1 dimples match the year and perhaps the lot/plant numbers in the first row of numbers
- some TI parts have a textured finish which would have to be consistent with the era and lot/plant number

A lot of work.

Even TI fob off fake/real queries on the TI forums.  They only guarantee parts bought through approved supply networks.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.

I have some of the same looking "suspicious" TL072 chips. Similar issues as described in the above link - crossover distortion. You should check yours.

Notice the TI logo on the dodgy ebay units have a round indistinct shape.

Things have come to a pretty pass if people are faking TL072 these days. Jeez... ::)
It's pretty sad, really. There must be better ways to make a living.

LM324 is probably cheaper per amp than BiFET. Was intended to be. The crossover distortion can be gross. There is a 2-unit dual, LM358.

i deliberately chose the lm358 for fuzz purposes because of its crossover distortion, i coaxed as much crossover fizz out of it as i could by capacitively loading the output. such crossover is nice to combine with wave folding, for a wall of non-harmonic distortion, while keeping the peaks intact, making chords sound beautifully broken, while still staying discernible and clear-ish.

cheers
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.
