Pokey technique...Instead of a tonegenerator, or strumming the guitar and trying real fast, or taping a keyboard key down..
 I hook my thumb to the conductive shaft [screwdriver] and poke around [usually starting at the end of a ckt] and with my trained ear can hear all kinds of things happening like singal loss and signal amplification...I do this all the time as a first resort...only takes a second and sometimes finds the problem that fast.
