By the schematic: it (mis?-)biases Q3 for variation of clipping shape/sound.

I mean, it is subtle. I would say that it just shapes the attack of the signal envelope, like it compresses it a little. I just have no idea what it has to do with the word "string" and why it is called that on the schematic.
