There's no "best" distortion, they sound different and have different application. Also, there's the personal taste.

The bands you listed have different guitar sounds from each other, so you need at least 2 or 3 distortion pedals. I suggest you to search for stuff like Suhr Riot and Okko Dominator. Also, there was a Black Sabbath-like pedal released some time ago, don't remember the name right now (Sabbra Cadabra?).

Popcorn o'clock.

This comes up so often it's unreal. I'm sure I've said "What is theBEST etc..." a few times too.

As matey boy says there will s no BEST.

It all depends on many this.

What was that pedal that all the switches and could be tuned to a bunch of different circuits? Was it an Anderton schematic?

Differential distortion is pretty cool. Although it might, or will require some tweaking.

let me re ask that question again
what would be a go to pedal for each of the bands listed
I know there is no 1 great pedal that would do it all. or all pedal companies would go belly up.
I will look in to the box of rock

You could also try stacking Big muff with any kind of od/dist.

Doesn't the boss katana amp have really great drive tones?

Deafbutpicky has a modified Sonic Titan layout called Kronos that's super dope and does a ton of different sounds.

Oh that's easy.  It's THAT one.  No, no, no, not that one over there, the OTHER one.  Yeah, just to the left.  No, not the brown one or the green one, but the taupe one.  Uh-huh.  That one.

But seriously, distortion is not only a matter of tonal taste, but also the rig it is intended to be inserted into.  So narrowing a choice down for those conditions is risky for the suggester.

Now, if your question was "What's a good distortion for a beginner to make?", that has some good candidates, in addition to much collective wisdom here.

So ask again.
