I am trying to build a simple line switcher (an A/B box) with 4 inputs to 1 output. A rotary switch seems logical, but I rather have a switch that is switchable with my foot so I can control the switch while standing. Does anyone have any ideas about how to build this? I'd also like to have some indicator so that its clear which input is selected.

Would this be easier with some solid state components?

It would be fairly easy with solid state parts.  A push button would step through a ring counter, which would select the desired channel.  Channels would be switched by something like a 4016 quad bilateral switch.  Look up schematics for ring counter and CMOS switches.  If you still need help, come back (see what you can do on your own).
