Guitar Volume Pot Crackling When Plugged into Rangemaster

When I'm plugged into my Rangemaster clone my guitars volume knob crackles.

I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere. I know the volume on the pedal itself crackles and is a well trodden topic. I'm also sure I remember reading somewhere that when there's a DC voltage on the pedals pots it can get carried across to the pots on the guitar. But after reading dozens of Rangemaster threads I can't find a specific mention of the guitars volume knob crackling. You'd think this would get mentioned since fiddling with the guitars volume is what Rangemasters are all about.

Do you have an input cap? On Rangemaster this is typically a 5n or like a 4.7-5.6n -

OK I might be an idiot. I just had a big play around with it and eventually I tried swapping some cables around. Problems gone. I looks like it was a bad cable, although the Rangemaster definately seems to exasterbate the issue. The same cable is noisey without the Rangemaster, but it doesn't seem to cause the scratching unless both are in use.


Could be intermittant though. For now I'm going to remove the bad cable and hopefully the problem won't reappear.

Probably bad cable, being amplified by Rangemaster.

Other: bad input cap on Rangemaster that's leaking DC - quick test with DMM will eliminate as an issue.

Possible bad jack on Rangemaster.  Dirty pot on guitar.  Any ugly noise amplified (boosted by RM) seems 1,000 times worse

Yep... I'm pretty sure it was the cable.

yep, probably a damaged shield. = a bad ground connection, i've driven myself bonkers before with similar issues.
