Swapping a resistor for a potentiometer

I have a small three leg potentiometer that I want to put in a fuzz circuit to bias a Germainium transistor.

I have only built two pedal circuits so far and am learning. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that i needed to connect the middle leg to the third leg and then solder it into the place of the resistor. (Noob question... bear with me...)
Is this correct?

Basically yes, you're right..

In more details, it depends on specific job you want to do your pot (which is wired as variabale resistor)..
(e.g. if you wish to raise resistance clockwise, short wiper with lug3 - if you wish the reverse effect, short wiper with lug1)

Can't figure your circuit but if pot is to replace Emitter resistor you should wire it with wiper shorted to lug1 (GND or voltage lower than on lug3) for clockwise raising gain..

Yes, what Antonis said.  When I first was starting out, I would get an old pot and with a couple of jumper wires, use my meter to convince myself of which terminal did what.   With a probe on the middle (wiper) and one of the outer lugs, I would turn it to one side or the other, and watch my meter (set to "ohms", omega symbol).     This is the variable resistor connection.
   
Once you have mastered that connection style, you can move on to 'voltage divider' connection of a pot, which uses all 3 terminals!
