Fender Hot Rod Deville Footswitch schematic without "more drive"

Hey yall,

The original footswitch for the HRD comes with one switch for changing channels and another for selecting "more drive" on channel 2. The thing is that more drive doesn't sound great and I'll never use it.

So I'm trying to build a footswitch that allows me to select between channels ignoring the more drive, but still has an LED indicator.

I found a few schematics for the original and I saw a photo of one the way I want it. So I drew up this rough schematic.

Does anybody know if it'd work or it'd wreck my amp?

Thanks!

Hi DF....literally, just copy the parts associated with the channel select from the original, and omit the more drive part.

CR1, LD1, the switch, the jack.  Mind how the diodes are 'oriented', they have a + and - to them.    Disregard if you're a bot, this being your 1st post :)  Welcome, if you're not a bot.

Hey Gibson thanks a lot! I'd still have to throw in the resistor so the LED doesn't blow up, right?

I'm not a bot. I think. Not that I would know if I were one

There are bots equipped with artificial intelligence.. :icon_wink:

Proof is the query for LED current limiting resistor..

"I don't mind  being taught all the time but I do mind a lot getting old" Antonis the Thessalonian..

Just checking, DF!  There have been quite a few interesting, but artificial, bots lately.  And with 'first posts' that were pretty good questions or 'observations'. Glad you're real.  So yes, welcome!

Changed my mind!
Limiting resistor: I'm not entirely sure why there is one on the other side and not on the channel side.  Find it hard to believe that diode's forward resistance is enough to protect the thing, LOL.    I'd try it with one in there, maybe something between 470R and 1k....if it's very dim or doesn't light, decrease the value til it does.  The schematic looks a bit different than the footswitch linked to - it DOES show a 47 ohm resistor in series with the channel LED, but that might be the amp panel itself...so to be cautious, I'd include it, and determine that it really does NOT belong there.

Shouldn't hurt anything to have the R there, and decrease it til the LED is correct brightness.

Hey everyone that helped, I finally got around to making a working footswitch. The main problem was that without the second diode, the amp would jump straight to More Drive (which sounds like garbage IMO).

I tested the one I'm posting now and it works like a charm in case anyone needs one in the future

Cool  :icon_cool:
Wouldn't any LED current limiting be inside the amplifier anyway? That way, if the cable/plug gets a short between conductors, it won't damage the amp circuits.
