I am about to build a FF on a PCB. I am going to use external pots in place of the internal trimpots but want to make sure I get the solder lugs right. Is the numbering consistent between trimpots and pots i.e 1 on left looking down at the screw controller?

In my experience, 1 is counter-clockwise from the front of the control. Which for "our" kind of external pots is looking down at the top of the shaft. With the lugs pointing down and control counter-clockwise, the left lug is connected to the wiper/middle, so that makes it "1". Trimpots vary in orientation of the "control" to pins - best to look for some kind of indicator on the device or check the spec sheet. Or just test it with your meter.

Most trimmers will have a '3' and/or a '1' printed somewhere on the body to tell you. There are many different types of trim pots, and just looking at it from above may not be enough information. Can you share what trimmer your using?

Currently away on hols. Will look closely when I get home!

The order of the pins doesn't really matter for a trimmer: it's a trimmer.  If it's not obvious from looking at it which are the ends and which is the wiper, then you can test easily with your DMM.

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...
