Good points!
Untill now I ony build a few pedals with all the jacks on one side. Slanted box, so the PCB doesn't have an exact 90% angle to the side of the enclosure but it worked for me. Once the pedal is on the board I rarely change cables and all the cables are tied so I don't expect any problems with this. The Chinese pedal I bought wasn't slanted at all but davent's tip is a good one.
