Hello!

Was set to replace the footswitch on an Aluminum Falcon 2, and noticed this wire. I haven't fully taken apart the pedal, but I'm assuming it's coming from somewhere on the PCB

What is it's function? Is it a ground? And if so can I reroute?

I've never seen such a thing, It's just wrapped around the switch...  :icon_question:

It's a chassis ground wire. If the pedal has ground isolated jacks (like the Marshall style) it might have been used for chassis grounding. If the jacks are metal frame then it should not be needed.

Thanks Mr. Bean,

Interesting. I believe these are Marshall style?

Is the style of grounding substantial? Wouldn't some kind of soldering be necessary? Seems kinda unreliable  ???

This kind of earth connection relies on pressure created when the nut on the foot switch is tightened. With a metal jack socket, it relies on a similar but smaller nut. Either could work loose.

If I'm being really fussy about a ground, I'll drill and tap an extra hole in the enclosure, then use a bolt, star washer and a tab washer for the connections. Mostly, I'm too lazy

Yes I am also mostly lazy. Looks like it's staying  ;D

I know that somewhere I must have made a pedal with those "mashall style" and didn't add a chassis ground...may go through the pile and look for them....Rainy day project...

Replaced switch and kept the chassis ground. All seems to be working, thanks guys! :icon_cool:

A slightly more elegant way to do it is use a serrated washer (lock washer) on the 3PDT and solder the ground wire to it. Or, do it like the 'big boys' and use a battery spring soldered to the actual PCB to make chassis ground.
