The Wright brothers got the plane off the ground without wind tunnel experimentation.

ummm... no. They built the 2nd wind tunnel in America in 1901. It took two years of experimenting with it to get the Flyer off the ground in '03.

Anyway you get the idea, you don't need a PhD to make a working guitar effect until you get into the difficult ones.

Ok, so you have your circuit perfect, bias, impedance, modifications, even e=mc^2, and it sounds great.
Now for the other half, the artistic one, time to box it up. And this takes time and sometimes pain.
We have seen some fantastic art work and enclousers on the forum. Talent at it's best.
Ear candy, sounds great, eye candy, good enough to put next to the tv.
Wife may not agree.
But in the end, walla, an effect has been born, even if it is a twin, or googleplex.
