Im building a DI box using an old UTC LS10X transformer. Its going to be a clone of the Bruce Swedien Bass Box DI. That box was wired backwards with the secondary as instrument input. But it's unclear how the DI XLR output was wired.

You can get many different impedances depending on how you wire it.

I have one source saying the original Bruce box DI output was wired in series.
How do I wire it in series? Is that the 500Ω version?

Like this?
1 = XLR Pin 2
3&4 Joined
6 = XLR Pin 3

But isn't 500Ω too high for a DI output going into a mic pre?
I would greatly appreciate any recommendations or guidance regarding how to wire the DI output.

Your suggested connections will work.

Unfortunately theses things are what they are.  I have no idea how the original unit is wired.   With no concrete info, even if you found a schematic, would you be believing it without proof.

You could set up a switch for 500 ohm and 200/250 ohm.   IMHO better than the original.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.

Transformer loading a post-1950 guitar pickup is always a compromise. The treble-losses of both pickup and transformer windings add together, at least.

But nothing will smoke. Just try it all ways.
