I breadboarded and built on a stripboard a mudhoney distorion. In both cases the op07 sounded very fizzy, especially as signal decays. When I replaced it with an ne5534 is sounds great. What is the cause of the fizzy-ness? Why does the, often considered less then chip, 5534 fix it? I tried removing the compensation cap and tried higher values but that had no effect on the fizz.

The schematic came from this thread

Not all OP07 are the same. This is a precision DC opamp. The part specifications are accordingly focused on DC performance. But the same part number from different manufacturers does not necessarily mean that the parts are identical, just that their performance conforms to the spec sheet. If audio specs are not part of the sheet (especially clipping behavior), that behavior is literally unspecified. The audio performance between OP07 chips from different manufacturers can be quite different, in my experience. I have had some that has a fizzy decay and very unpleasant distortion in a Rat-type circuit. This is probably also the reason why some people think the OP07 sounds great in a Rat and others think it sucks. The NE5534 on the other hand is explicitly an audio opamp and imho overall a much better chip in a Rat. It has tight audio specs and quite predictable clipping characteristics. Ibanez seems to have thought so too when they made the Fat Cat.
