I was thinking the link to fish came from chagreen, which is also tough and made from sharks skin.

Before vulcanized fiber, windings were wrapped in Kraft paper, a very high grade of brown paper bag stock. Cheap kraft paper is fancy fish-wrapping. Saying "fishpaper" for super-tough insulation is a bit of a joke.

Old transformers I took apart used paper impregnated with beeswax. All environmental friendly and usually they still work after 75 years.
