I couldn't find the answer to this in the "Secret Life of Pots"

I just built an AMZ MOSFET Booster which as you may know, uses a 5K volume pot.  I subbed in a 10K because that's all I had, and of course the first 80% of the rotation does nothing, as expected.  But then I thought, if a pot is just a resistor, and two 10k resistors in series will yield a total resistance of 5K, why couldn't I just solder a 10k resistor across lugs 3 and 2 (1 and 2 are soldered together)?  I know that will change the overall resistance on the pot to 5K, but will it mess with the log taper?
