Heavy/Metal/Distortion/ect.. Opinions?

Im building a tube screamer and plan to make a few extra w differences---the more the better i say--its art and functionality for me-, anyway, I want to build a pedal that is more like a thrash/metal type--must have variety to stay sane :lol:  Does anyone have any opinions about what to build for this? I have many now and still not satisfied--i dont want to buy one..I have faith in the DIY.  Ive heard the Sonic Dist is heavy? All opinions welcome.

The sans amp GT2 offers lots of over-the-top distortion.  But it's a pain to build.  If you're keen, you could "cut" the high-gain, marshall option out of it.

I think the Sansamp is the better option. It's difficult to make it
specially if you aren't very patience, but it really worth. This
distortion is the one to me   IMHO
Maybe you could try the BOSS DS-1, it's a nice distiortion
too...

People are forgeting Aron's stuff, a lot of which gets really heavy, like the Shakka Express. Also Joe Davisson's stuff is all HEAVY.

The Joe Davisson's Obsidian (any version) is perfect for heavy music. Some Aron's effects too (the Insanity Box sounds really cool). In schematics 2 you will find a DS-1 modded by Howie. Is better to look for diy effects than the commercial ones, you will find a lot of things that you don't find in commercial effects.

If you have already started the TS build, check out Robert Keeley's baked TS mod.  It gives three times the normal TS "distortion".  He describes the mod in detail here:

That could help with your need for dirt.

Hey ansil, did you ever get around to making the jfet dual rectefier?  If you did, how did it turn out compaired to using tubes?

William, you will need to use trimmers for the drain resistors or it will just oscillate out of control. Also the source resistor switching can get redundant, tune each stage as you go for the best sound.

I liked it.  not bad..  actually quite usefull  but i still liked the eggstacy better.. to me that would be an awesome pedal, i just need to get a computer download the pcb software  dedicate time to making a  layout and then buy a printer and some pnp and make a board..

unfortuneatly i dont' have the fundage.. if someone wants to make a board for any of these then be my guest.   but like i said i only breadboarded it.

Is that the purple one with the "booty" control? I'll have to give that a shot on the breadboard, doesn't look too complicated.

i tried this, i even had a decent layout made up by hand.. you know the pen and paper routine..   so i bought the copper clad  made the little heat tank to keep warm water heated then put my etching container down in there with the etchant  not touching water..(wanted to make that clear) inda like a double boiler.  anyway i cleaned the board prepped it gave it tender sweet love and drew on it.  finally got over the shakes long enough to do this..!!.  etched it and for 3 hours it didnt' do jack crap!!!!!

so i threw out the old etchant.(not actually thrown away too tedius to explain my method right now).. cut off the heater.. found a cheap 1 dollar generic tupperware container put some more etchant in it and threw the board back in.     in 20minutes i had a board that was awesome.. untill i tried to take off the sharpie..(yes i used a brand name sharpie) when i did this there was very little or no copper underneath.  so i tried to fix it the craig anderton way  "with soldering little pieces of resistor legs where the traces break or are incomplete"  after making a decently lookin solid board i started to drill it..  

needless to say would anyone care to guess how many pieces are inbedded in my wall of my old place..  yep its nice when the drill cracks the board refuses to let go and sends shards of metal (rember teh craig anderton method) and pc board all over the house.


needless to say i haven't  attempted that again.  except for my guvnor..  and i had slightly better results than perfboard.  

another reason why i stick to the 386 less parts.

Hey Ansil, when I did my first boards, the same happened. Here is something that will help you, just be shaking the substance when the board was inside of it. You will get a better and faster job.

Ansil, I'm doing great. Thanks for asking. I've got a few new things getting ready to come out of the pipe.

As for building your stuff, PCB headaches, etc: I did the Meteor with perfboard and it wasn't too bad. Pad per hole or the cheapie RS perf stuff, either way, you can do these little "amp simulator" circuits pretty easily with perf. Just take your time and go slow and you'll get there. I got to the point where PCB was driving me up the wall. I see no use for it unless in the future I need to go into heavy production.  In that case I would hire a service to make the boards for me anyway. I'm not fooling with them myself anymore, but that's just me.
