I've heard that compressor pedals are highly associated to sustain. I know that it cuts high signal and boosts low signal. I've never heard any compressor works so I can't really imagine. Is sustain only what the compressor is for ?

If I connect a compressor (a DIY actually) to a high-sustain pedal like the Insanity Box, does it mean I can get sustain longer than that provided by the Insanity Box alone?

What (compononents probably)  affects the various characteristics of sustain in a compressor (length, tone etc)

Thanks for any answers

You probably have some...if you have a tube amp or a Fuzz box...
compression can make the start of a note quiter and the trail end louder
some call that sustain, because it takes longer for the note to fade.
The main reason I would like a Comp [PCB+parts on the way for a Dyna I tried to perf...] is for the sound of it, and they drive other pedals a certain way..like envelope filters.
I get plenty of Fuzzy sustain as it is ...no prob.
