best circuits to use for cascading 4 gain stages?

Hello, I was looking to do a circuit that used 4 transistor gain stages to cascade the gains for a totally thick and fuzzed out sound at the end.  Each stage would have a trimpot off the emitter to control the gain of that stage.  I also plan to have a rotary switch so you can take the signal out after either the first, second, third, or fourth stages, allowing you to get not only the crazy fuzz at the end but everything in between.

I was thinking of a single Ge booster into a tonebender, or a LPB-1 into a big muff.  Which circuits would you recommend using, in which combination, and whose schematics?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Sounds kind of like a brown sound in a box, which is basically two mu-amps in series using j201 JFETs or maybe something like the rocket?

Doug Hammon's Meteor has 4 Jfet stages I think.
