differential distortion?  That is, has anyone done/contemplated this? As I contemplate the things one can do with a high gain small-signal pentode in a guitar preamp, it occurs to me that variably tapping gain from there to drive a DDE type circuit made of both halves of a 12ax7 might be a neat way to mix dirt in.  Any thoughts?

Either way, happy holidays, Aron, Peter and all!

What's differential distortion?  Are there effects which have it?

And, the anode mixer may be the way to do it.  Two triodes sharing the same plate resistor but with different cathode resistors.  Hiwatt's and Ampeg V- and VT- series have them.  O'Connor calls them tweed mixers.

Differential Distortion ... look at how the transistors are facing' each other...
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I'm not actually too concerned with how to mix them right now, just whether the DD idea can be pulled off with a pair of triode stages instead of bipolars.  It ought to work, right?

BTW, the schematic, or at least links to it, and sound samples can be found at Runoffgroove.com.

Interesting design.  Check out the Laney Klipp 100 schematic, it looks sort of similar.

Yeah, Chill, that looks like it may be going in the right direction.  Do you know anything about that amp, what that channel sounds like?
