I have a few of these and I don't know what they are  Black, about 3/8" in diameter,1/8" thick like a pill.Markings-on one side FR2,on the other side  25   is it a diode?

It would help if you tried measuring the device with your multimeter.  Use all ranges: Resistance, Capacitance, and Diode, try the meter leads in both directions.  This will help narrow down the options.  If you get wierd readings just make-up a table.

How do the leads connect to the device, axially (like a resistor) or radially like a cap?  If radial, can you see the wires under the epoxy?

It could be a diode, it could be a cap, it could also be some type of fusing device.  Some of these options will be include or excluded depending on your meter readings.

I've seen low voltage varistors and fuses in that style package. If the meter says that it has about zero resistance, I'm going ot guess a fuse. It might also be a thermistor. If you get a resistance of more than zero, try holding your finger on it for a few seconds and see of the reading changes.

The body looks like bakelite with axial leads. One lead has a red mark The FR2 is embossed around a ring with what looks like a dollar sign in the center.on the other side along with the numbers is a transistor character.I put 2 in series along with an LED in my DS-1 and get more fuzz than I want but mucho dynamics and sustain.I'm trying to tone down this pedal but seem to have too much drive no matter what I use for clipping diodes.
