Big Muff Tone Control

I've noticed that a lot of people have modified Fuzz Faces, ToneBender MKIIs, and even the RM Axis Fuzz by adding the Big Muff-style tone control to the outputs right before the volume control.

My question is...what purpose does the extra transistor stage serve in the Big Muff that's stuck in between the Tone control and the Volume pot?  Does that boost the signal back up to compensate for the signal loss through the tone control section?

TIA

Yes.

So in theory, one could use that exact same boosting stage in a pedal that's been modified with the BMP tone control?
