Hey Doug,

While visiting your webpage I listened to the Highway89 sound clip, what a great sound, I just gotta build one.

Where is your schem-o and/or info for that Highway89 build? all I could find was the meteor and a few other things, but no Highway89 stuff.

Over on runoffgroove.com I was able to find a perf-board layout but no part values or details.

I gotta build one!.

If you email Doug at this address, dougbhammond@yahoo.com, he will send you a schematic. That's how I got mine.

To get back at the "some distortions sounds best at bedroom volume and some don't" idea, I think I can add to that 8)

My Boss MetalZone has this problem. At bedroom volume it sounds great, like a mini-stack in a stompbox. Crank the amp and it starts sounding grainy at some settings. My amp isn't really helping, but the pedal doesn't sound right somehow :? Time for a DIY distortion that's good at loud volume ;)
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

The other thing about the BOSS Metal Zone, which can be used to good effect if you can control it, is that it will feedback relatively easy with your amp at high volume levels. When used in conjunction with a volume pedal, you can get a sustain that lasts for days - almost like an ebow. But, when you don't want the feedback, it can ba a hassle. I use mine in church, and we play at about 100dB on the average. Sometimes feedback can be a problem. I still like the pedal, though.  8)

Who is that Fletcher/Munson dude with the curve of how perceived bass, mid's, and treble varies at different volumes?   8)

Hello.........
IMHO,
Also when you leave your bedroom ang go to the gigs, you will use volumes that will start to push/distort the poweramp section (tube or solid), and push/distort the speakers. Not only distortion but also it will change the tone highs/mids/lows.

And will start to interact with the build/room/vennue that will start to have caracteristics on your tone.

I usually have the gain/distortion potentiometer om higher settings at bedroom than on the gigs...
Sure it needs way less low end at gigs volumes than at home.

Well, that's what i've perceived at my experiences

You got it now Paul,
With a Plexi set that way it's hard not to get a good tone, and it love's pedals, which is what I love, I use to have a Convert about 10 yrs ago, sold it to a Buddy, he still plays it, I know where there might be a stack of NOS Moduals for that amp your playin if you know anybody interested in them, I can check and see if they are still there.

the 100dB church! I wanna go there! No wait, I wanna PLAY there! Praise God and pass the earplugs ... lol

george- lol.

Honestly, we can get that loud, but people will only start to complain at around 110dB, which we would sometimes approach in "the old days". But, we are in a big room now, with about a 20 foot high ceiling, so we kind of have to play loud, I guess. The drummer uses Roland V-Drums and we have a big bass amp and a couple of 100 watt combos. We play more contemporary rock-ish sort of stuff, but we do everything in between, too. The people sit about 20 foot back from the stage, and the musicians are about another ten feet behind. So, there is about 30 feet between the musicians and the people and the speakers are mounted up high. 100dB sounds very loud, but it's not really that loud when you are sitting out where the people are.

JD,

I built some of my own modules, some just from pictures that someone sent me. The only module that I am still looking for is the High Gain EQ. Do you think there might be one of those in that pile? BTW, at my website, I have a page devoted to that amp. I have totally reverse engineered it and made PCB layouts for most of the modules, at least the ones that are more DIY-friendly. I think the design of the amp was revolutionary at the time the amp was introduced, anyhow.
I'm going to have to try that patch cord trick sometime.  8)

The other guitar player in a band used one. Real nice amp too!
Plexi's and effects? Here's my analogy...Plexi is the sun Effects are the rain, for your tone to grow with a plexi you need both.
A plexi alone can be a plain unruly large pile of power. Without Effects
you're probably missing out on 90% of what a Plexi is very capable of doing very well.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

 I'm just jealous - I play in my local church using a Rivera 30-12 and I can't have it up much louder than about 3 in the interests of balance and the small size of the venue.  Still I *do* get to rock out sometimes, contemporary praise and worship has come a long way in the last 20 years ....

What church do you belong to?

george-

I go to a church called "Extreme Church" in Las Vegas, NV.
Don't let the name fool you, we aren't really that extreme, we just believe that God is. If you read the Bible, you could come to that conclusion.  8)
(But, I suppose you already know that...)

george

you betcha!  christianity is a pretty extreme religion ... it's a wonder we're not being investigated by the FBI ... yet

Paul Marossy

The FBI is down under?!?

george

no we have our own bunch of incompetents
