LOL both on the front of a RACO ...
that way with angle plugs I can set them close side by side, plug and unplug them, and not have wires sticking up and all over the tops where I like to be able to see the paint.
I thought this one over and over sometime ago input goes on the left front and output always goes on the right front [I arbitrarily deceded this because I like left to right stuff].
Sides is clearly out [IMO] then you got stuff sticking out the sides. When you run out of angles you need about three inches to plug a straight plug in. Even the angles add about 3/4+'' '' to the sides.
Front mounting In RACO and having the switch take up part of the left over space in the fr of the box made the best sense of the alternatives I considered.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Why would it be a trick question?

BTW I assume right in, left out is when looking at the top.
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

When you say top of the box, what do you mean?

I think you're missing one option.

there's in right, out left

there's the opposite (out right, in left)

there's back, like a rat

then there's on the physical top of the box, like a meatball.

and I can't draw pictures with text on this forum, but I can make a frowny face. :(

For pedal board application (where the patch order stays generally fixed), on the BACK is best, because you can fit the pedals closer together. However, since most of the commercial effects are patched RIGHTSIDE>LEFTSIDE, that's what people expect.

If you make effects for other people, and make them LEFTSIDE>RIGHTSIDE, you're asking for trouble, because they will patch them backwards.

On top is cool for more experimental stuff, where you'll be patching and repatching a lot.

I'd certainly like mine on the top, lovetone style, but I have no sloped boxes (funny because I was just doing a google for some).  But, normally I do them on the side, the normal way.

I like the setup Input on the right side and Output on the left side AND/OR the setup with all the jacks in the back (like the Rat I think), but with the Input always in the right side and the output in the left side. To me, this is a easy way to do a "entire band" settup that I like: singer in the center, bassist in the left side (if you are seeing the band, in the right side if you are the singer), guitarist in the right side (same thing above).
