Hello,

I'm new to this whole DIY stuff, but i am more excited than i can explain. I've been playing guitar for about 4 years and like a "personal" guitar sound/tone. I don't want to sound like someone else, I guess you could say i'm on a mission to find that "perfect sweet spot". What better oportunity to find my own special sound than to make my own gear. I've been searching on the web for the past couple weeks trying to find the perfect spot to start.

... Anyhow, what i'm trying to get at is i can't wait for the next project, and i want to thank aron and all the other people that have given all this time and effort to help newbies like me make some cool stuff.

Anxiously excited,

hello there sic..  and welcome to the diy family..  i am going to make you an offer you can' t refuse.. lol  sorry i saw the god father tonight.

a couple of questions..  what type of guitar do you own  what if any mods or pickup changes have been done.

what amp??

what type of music do you play ?

is there any perceived tone you desire.  maybe we can steer you in the right directions.

My gear isn't the greatest, but thats half the reason i'm here =D

Currently my setup is

Guitar :

Jay Turser 7-string, dual humbuckers (stock), 24 frets... no mods, just the usual volume and tone knob, and the pickup select switch.
(btw, i don't use the 7th string, its not even on there... i just like a huge fretboard...  plus if someone tries to play it, they generally get confused because of the empty space and large fretboard and decide to put it down :)

Amp:

At the moment i am using a Roland Cube30 with COSM modeling. Its pretty nice, with the different modeling im able to change my sound to my mood, i seem to lean towards the R-fier Stack modeling sound. I like the harmonics it produces with a crisp and crunchy distortion. Despite the fact its only 30watts, it is actually keeps up with my friends crate 2X12 65W amp.

For a while i played through a bass amp because i loved the thickness of the bottom end it gave me, but it took away from the treble end waaaaay too much.

Music i Play:

In all honestly i cound't really describe my sound. I like to have versitility in my playing and my sound. I play alot of improv and love a good contrast between my bass and my treble ends.

Someone just recently described my bands sound from Iron Butterfly, The Doors and even as far away as Nirvana. We play eccentric music that is really all our own.

Personally i listen to alot of Tool, and definately love the tone. Getting to a tone of that caliber would be awesome.

I think my number one complaint i have about my sound is the poor response i get from my wah. I have a morley pro series II wah, and to be honest, it sounds like crap, it doesn't matter what amp, what series in my effects and whether or not i use a battery or a plug. Most of the time i use it i end up just having it sit somewhere near the middle and get a nice "click/crunch" in the tone.... but other than that i feel like my Wah is flacid =/

Thanks for the encouragement, it is all much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Sic

If that 'flaccid' wah is one with a led and a light dependant resistor with a bit of metal that moves between them, it might be out of alignmet. Try bendig the led or ldr closer together or something. I have 'fixed' a number of wahs this way!

Making your own wah board and putting that in instead of the stock PCB does miracles ;)
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.
