Runoffgroove Tube Reamer--not Screamer

I just finished my tube reamer from runoffgroove and it called for a 741. Is there anything else that would work well in this circuit with more gain/distortion?

Hi,

didn't build the Tubereamer yet, but build a TubeScreamer.
And i tweaked it for more versatile settings....

a bigger GainPot (1M instead the Stock 500K)
Or a Switch, to schange the Clipping Mode from soft to Hard, to
get a Fat Distortion Sound (in my Case i soldered 3 1n4004 Diodes
for HardClipping and made them switchable by a toggle Switch...
The SoftClipping Diodes are removed from the GainStage than and
the 51p Cap is changed by a 100p Cap) The Distortion is not MetalLike,
but gives a fat crunch.

For the TubeReamer, perhapt remove the 470K Resistor and the 5K Gainpot. Use a Trimpot to set the Gain to your Taste and add a 500K Pot
at the Point where the 470K Resistor was. Perhaps an 1M Pot will make more Gain..

A Difference to the Screamer is, that it uses a DualOPAmp and the second OPAmp is used for the ToneControl. You can try to build the TubeReamer by using 1/2 of DualOPAmp like the TL072 or Similar (RC4558?)..

Hmmm... Opamps themselves usually have enough gain. The parts around them are used to set the gain of the circuit.

If you make the 470k resistor in the feedback loop bigger you will get more distortion. You could even take that resistor away from there... The gain control might become a bit useless though.

Another thing you might try is making the 1k resistor between the gain pot and the 0.22µF cap smaller. Just be aware that the combined resistance of that gain pot and that resistor (together with that 0.22µF cap ofcource) affect the cuttoff frequency of the bass rolloff. That should not be too big problem though, as the cutoff changes anyway when the drive pot is turned. If it sounds too thin just make the cap bigger. :)

try a tlc2262  although not more gain  it will distort better,  as for my personal mods  kick this..

personally i would use the tlc2262 and adapt my pinout for the dual opamp and ground the other sides inputs and outputs.

add in a 1n4001 with one of the 1n941 diodes put a 600k resistor and a 120pf cap on a switch to put them in series with the existing parts.

changet the .22uf cap to a .33 that way it is almost at 700 ohms before the bass roll off is at normal specs.

use the original .22 cap instead of the .033 replace the 1k resistor with a 1k pot and use as a tone control.

and for my personal tastes i usually use a .068uf on the input and a .68 on the output
