Buffalo Springfield "Mr. Soul" tone...a modified fuzz face or similar?

I tried searching the forum but couldn't find an answer...what is the fuzz box used on the aforementioned song?  It sounds a little jangly to be a fuzz face, but maybe it's just one that was modified to have a smaller input cap or output cap?  It also has a "ripping" quality...so maybe it's deliberately under biased a bit?  Any help here would be appreciated.

Is it even a fuzz pedal?  I remember reading something about Neil dropping his amp down some stairs and it ended up sounding distorted and he kept using that way.  But I don't know if that was with Buffalo Springfield or later.

It sure sounds like boosted/compressed fuzz. I guess, that Mr Young started to experiment at the very time, when the fuzz effect became popular.
Maybe he knew some techs, which were aware of how to mod such a circuit. But what do I know.

Anyways, here is the song, for a reference at:

Web consensus seems to be overdriven preamps on the recording console (direct in), but nobody seems really sure.

In the great 'Distortion' issue of Guitar Player magazine ( early 90's ) - It was claimed that Neil Young did have a Vox Tonebender during the Buffalo Springfield period.
