I can't find the metal stack caps like robert keeley uses. Can someone help me out!  :D

Thank you!

I've noticed Keeley says "metal film stacked caps" when talking about his mods...but isn't that just another way of saying MKT caps?  The only advantage MKTs have over greencaps is that they're less likely to totally fail if they get damaged in high voltage circuits, isn't it?

I always thought MKTs and greencaps were practically identical except for the way they're constructed.

Aren't MKT capacitors the fairly large ones?  The advantage of the Panasonic V-Series stacked metal films is that they're very small...roughly 2/3 the size of the silver ones that are used in the Boss pedals and the "greenies," but they're actually cheaper (at least from Digikey) and higher quality.

Keeley uses the Panasonic V-Series in his mods...he gave the Digikey part numbers for the caps in his SD-1 modifications list.  I noticed that he left C8 off the SD-1 mods list.  C8 is the 0.047uF capacitor that goes to the base of the output buffer transistor (Q6), and it should also be changed to a 0.1uF

Here's a picture of the circuit board of one of my modified SD-1s:

Yeah, MKTs have the plastic box housing (1.0uFs have a 12mm lead spacing)...while those V Series look like they're dipped.  Are V-Series caps Metallized Polyester though?  I guess they just take up less space.

ALSO:
Does it make much difference which clipping diode you replace with the germanium?  I did the 5-Star mod on my Denio Super Overdrive (which is an exact SD-1 clone) and replaced the middle diode in the set of 3 lined up on the PCB...does it make much of a difference which one it replaces?

phillip

Replacing the middle diode (D5 in the SD-1) with the Germanium diode is the same as replacing the one that's right against the 10K resistor next to the IC (D6...the same one Keeley replaces).  Those two are in series together in the clipping section, so you can replace one or the other with the same results.  If you had replaced the one that's closest to the edge of the board (D4), it would have been different since that one is the single one in the clipping section.

Ahh...thanks Philip.

The compontents are numbered differently in my Denio so I wasn't quite sure which diodes where which.  Your SD-1 picture up there has given me a good idea where some of the cap replacements are too!

Thanks!!

I feel like an idiot, but I can't find any other values there-is there any easy way to pick up the different sizes?

phillip

Try this:

http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T041/0779.pdf

That's the entire catalog page that has all the V-Series that they have available.

hi phillip, just found out my sd-1 has no d3,r31, there are only bare wires, is that the same as yours ? does it mean both are already short out to increase power ? thanks

phillip

Yes, if those two are replaced with jumpers, then yours is one of the newer ones that already has them shorted for more power.  Both of mine had them replaced with jumpers too.
