I doing my 1st project, i get all the parts needed.

The 100k pot i got has a Very long shaft on it (as most do).

what is the best way to cut it to the right lengh?

Mike Burgundy

I just clamp the shaft in a vise and use a hacksaw or a Dremel. Just make sure there's no metal shavings going into the pot (I use a piece of paper-tape and point the opening downwards, even when covered)

I mark it with a Sharpie, then grip the waste end in a vise, then hacksaw on the line.

Cut halfway through, then rotate the shaft in the vise and cut from the other side.

If you have a grinder, you can clean it up with the grinder. A file might work for that, too.

i have big hands so i just clip it off with a set of heavy duty pliers

I go around and clamp on there using grip, scoring it around then one big push and it flies off...make certain your nippers have no pinch points you're 'in.
Grinder, or I use a file cause it takes it down kwik enough.
The way to cut a file?...score it with the grinder, then break on the score lines...only way I've found to cut the hard file material.

I use a hacksaw.

Tried with a dremel and one of those cutting disks and the shaft got so hot it ruined the pot.

Hacksaw with the shaft held in a vise. I use a file to clean up the edges.I have also used a Dremel Tool, but I prefer the hacksaw method. Brute force baby!

Being a 'pince it off type', I would have to say you can get better accutacy ie fairly flat with easy to clean up shoulders using a hacksaw and a guide...the edge of the vise, your thumb [not recommended for ultimate safety, but I do it anyway N/P].
Actually I prefer the wide mouth vise grip pliers, and a couple clamps holding that down.
I've had luck drilling shaft sized hole in scrap wood, clamping that, sticking the shaft and a piece of paper in the secured hole...that puts the pot body on top...and hacking away at it horizontally.
I could add about the top of the shaft being a load bearing surface, having it perfectly flat at 90 degrees makes the knob stay flat if contact is made there.
some of these knobs are larger than the shaft, and go on kinda 'wobbly'
