OT: favourite speakers

hey... i was thinking about changing my speakers in my combo... i have the vintage 30's in there now but thought i might like a different flavor... what one's do you like?

 I played through a 75w celestion PV stak...really tight punchy...more mids than
 The celestion 25w's are what I use. I hread sometime the V30's are somewhat similar sounding higher output...oh yeah dude sedd they cut on stage better. I would thing 4z12's...either of these or Jensen uh 25w/30w'ers would be excellent choices.
 I'm thinking the only speakers that will clearly 'beat' those [you can always go massive handling clean PA types, but to my ears experience they'll 'change the tone alot and be more penetrating/piercing] without getting away from the warm tone guitar type speaker are the similar type units that just cost more, the VOX Bulldog [name?/blueback/greyback]...like in the old VOX amps.
  However after reading numerous reviews and doing research on this matter, the new ones arent 'the same' or 'as good' as the old ones...hard to say when cone fatigue [which up to the point of failure only sounds 'looser'].
 The cones break in...and become less tight after some high amplitude time on them.
 I think the speakers you have are as good a choice as any for 2x12's..go to four twelves by adding another 2x12 cabinet and big tone difference. Plus you can compare speaker types, even if in a different cab type.
 I personally like closed back cabs for stage projection. Open backs make alot of sense sitting atop another cabinet...the drummer gets alot of 'cue' off the back of the speaker/cabinet.
 As an interesting example, take your open back cab, clamp a large chair cushion between the back of the amp and a wall...play the amp to the point of 'pumping the speakers...remove the pad/enclosure backing and move the amp an inch foreward...you should notice quite a difference in sound expecially in the Mids/Bass Dept.

I've always had good luck with the Jensen reissues. The Webers are good also, but it's subjective, personal taste. Plus break-in can take a while before you can really judge their tone. Be nice if they came pre broken-in.

The vintage 30's bare no resemblance to 25 and 30 watt vintage greenback types, different frame, cone-kit, magnet and voice-coil form

the vintage 30's are actually about a 60 watt speaker in reality and are twice as loud as 25's...WAY too much mids for my taste and no clean tone to speak of...good  for metal for the most part

try the anniversary 30 watt G12H they are IMO the best available 12 inch speaker...they sound very similar to the old pre-rola ones and you can pump a 50 watt head into even just two and they won't blow...awesome clean AND distorted tone...

the way I break those in for people is first I remove the doping with acetone (lots of original pre-rolas had no doping) and then I hook the speaker up to a variac at 6 volts for 2 hours...makes 'em sound like they're "30" years old!

Personally I use 25 and 30 watt celestions before 1974, and I like the old JBL alnico D-120F greyback speakers from the 60's too...

the new Italian jensens sound ok if you really break 'em in good, but they blow pretty easily and are prone to cone-cry lots of times (like the orginal ones were)

I prefer the ceramic types over the alnico jensens because they're not as harsh in the highs (and less cone-cry)

that's one of the speakers i was looking at... i've got a 100watt ampeg combo and was thinking about replacing one of the vintage 30's with the celestion g12h 30 watt and i wanted to know if i would end up blowing it ...

Me too! Real nice to hear someone else say that! You get shot on some forums for liking ceramic over alnico. Or saying you like Jensens. lol

BTW, I think the Vintage 30 goes real nice in a MusicMaster Bass. One sweet little amp!
