I've seen these mentioned but I'd like to know if they're specifically good for any particular effect.

I know they are used in the MXR Blue Box, but I don't think that ckt is too particular about what trans. you use.

 Was the Garage Fuzz using 2222

gagan's tape measure boost uses it.

It can work in any pedal that uses 2n5088 or 89, 2n3904, bc109, bc108 and other npn but from what i have read here, it has less gain than 5088 or 89,
Oh yeah!

The 2N2222 is a low gain general purpose transistor. It's about at the bottom of the totem pole as far as gain goes. It doesn't seem to be too noisy, though. I have a bunch of metal can type 2N2222's that were given to me.

That Garage Fuzz circuit does use a pair of those. I built that one just for fun.

That's the ones I'm talking about Paul.
The metal can types. I'm interested in using them to make a "gain" based pedal. Anymore suggestions? Anything I can check out at runoffgroove?

I've liked using metal can 2N2222 in the Sili-Face & Sili-Face II.  The Multi-Face and Tantalus Project would also be fine with them.

I'm guessing any kind of "vintage" silicon fuzz would benefit from a metal can 2n2222. I liked it when I breadboarded the FT70. I ended up using one in my axis fuzz build too. It has a nice smooth sound, when you don't want or need high hfe.

i think my lpb-1 clone has one in it right now~
i was running low on 5088's so i snagged my last 5088 out on my lpb-1...just dropped one(2222)in the socket... and it sounds good to my ears...
hth,
be well,
