2N5088 Transistors

Hey, on this website I saw this little guitar buffer, a small, easy circuit, which used a 2N5088 or similar transistor. My problem is that I have searched the whole internet around, and can still not find any place to buy these. Even ELFA here in Scandinavia does not have it...

You can also get them at http://www.mouser.com and http://www.digikey.com (both in the U.S.) but with international shipping, I would absolutely agree that Steve at http://www.smallbearelec.com is the best way to go for your pedal electronics needs.

There are many transistors that will easily replace this one.  You must be able to get the BC-series ?  A BC549 or 550 will easily replace the 2N5088, as will an MPSA18.

Make sure you have the BC549B or BC550B (the "B" is important)

This is the same Hfe or current gain range as the 2N5088

I think the "B" isn't the one. Do a search for a BC549C, they have more gain. Do a search for the datasheet and you will see it.

The "C" is more like the 2N5089, indeed more gain....

BTW, both "B" and "C" will work in the circuit. Actually the "gain" is not really important here. Because the "gain" we are talking about is the current gain, and this has only a little influence on the REAL gain, the voltage gain.

My bc549c's are around 590-640 hfe, and the 549b's are at 350-400 hfe. I'd go with the C's to sub 2n5088's  :roll:
