What's a good easy distortion build thats good for powerchords open chords and lead. My typa sound is pearl jam, and sometimes scooped metal.

Real Easy? MXR Dist.+...Easy, nothing to measure, bias, adjust, trim, or gain match. No unusual or hard to find components. Just put it together right and you'll have distortion. You could also change cap values for more bass. There's other simple dist.'s out there too. Check the pedal building sites.

MXR aint got that good tone. I like tone like rats and fulltone 70's

Taste and tone are subjective. BTW, the Fulltone is a fuzz circuit, not dist.. If you want easy, the Fulltone's beyond entry level. If you like a different tone, go to the pedal sites and see what fits your taste and building skill level. Here's a few sites:

Look for the Big Daddy.  They have a sound file there.  Prolly my favorite not TOO heavy distortion.  (Though it DOES have a good bit of grind.)  Extremely easy.  I used all the same parts and had NO problem getting it to work.  I subbed a few JFETS and all I had to do was change out a resistor.  Very simple and fun.
Life is like a box of chocolates.  You give it to your girlfriend and she eats up the best pieces and throws the rest away.

I just finished a Blackfire perf build as I made a mistake on the last one causing a horrible howl that I fixed somehow(I really don't know how, I probed around & finally ran a jumper).

Well anyway, this one sounds really good & isn't that difficult. You can lay it out just like the schem cause none of the wires cross or anything. Just take your time & don't try to squish it too close together & it'll come out all right.
