A couple of years ago, GP had an issue featuring the best pedals ever.  Top 100, Essential pedals, can't remeber exactly how they put it, but it was the cover story.  Anyone have an idea which issue this is?

Man, I love this one.  I have had to staple the cover back on twice because I read it so much.  My favorite issue ever!
I have this at home but I'm at college now, so I can't tell you which one it is, sorry.  I looked on the GP website, and I couldn't find it there either.   Do you have questions about it (I've got most of it memorized  :) ) or are you just interested in getting a copy of it?

That issue can't hold a candle to the Stombox Mania issue from 1995, which spawned Art Thompson's Stompbox book.

I forget exactly when the issue in question was, but it might have been early 2002. I recall that it was the first issue with their new graphic designer and it had a very different look for them. It had a silvery blue Roger Mayer Octavia on the cover.

I have it right in front of me - It's the sept 2002 edition.

I recall it generated a bit of controversy on this forum when it came out.

It's also only the 'Top 50' greatest stomboxes of all time - the one's they left out probably caused the controversy.  Wot no DOD pedals?!?

Thanks George.  You're a lifesaver.  I was searching the web for 'top 100...' so no wonder I got nothing.  And Alex, this is the kind of stuff I wear out too.  In fact, I usually spend more time on the gear reviews than the artist profiles, etc.  Thanks again guys.

Comming from GP and being the "Top 100" pedals,it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that 100 is enough to feature most brands in there to keep advertisers happy.

Aharon, Guitar Player has reviewed one of my boxes even though I have never advertised there (or anywhere else). So it isn't a totally closed shop!

Hi PAul.
No...you are right,it's not a totally closed shop, some gems filter through just by the sheer weight of the quality and or innovation, but I'm pretty confident that most reviews in not just GP but other publications are biased and the phazers set to stun only because they do not want to upset advertisers.
I buy them sometimes (mags) but I must confess I always take 99% of the content as adverisement. That being said I also know that most product out there is worth something, does a job, whether you are paying too much for it is another story.
For example ,GP has a side thing going called Icon Series or something where they feature what they consider to be milestones in the history of rock,be it man or machine.Last issue was MArshall amps and Jim Marshall.
I bought the issue, enjoyed the readding, the pictures, droolled over the vintage gear ,interviews with the"30 Kickass Marshall players" and I can see why a kid would want to go out and buy a half stack for 2 grand and wail away at home.It does work cause it worked on me too,I did not go out and buy one but it makes you want to.The whole thing was a big ad that I paid $6 on top to have the pleasure to read through.
I guess my point is .......as long as you know what's going on and are in control there's no worries.

Just an opinion.
