I will be moving to Taiwan for 4 months tomorrow, and was wondering if anyone here lived near Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Just looking for some overseas electronics help.

Teaching einglish?? I mean, all Americans & Canadians I met in Taipei were there to teach english  :-)

Been living in Taipei for 6 months. Its really an 'Electronics Paradise'.   ...If you speak chinese, that is. :-)

The best/cheapest stores are hidden in the small streets &  spooky dark corners around the Main Railway Station. But be sure to take your dictionary with you, or get some paper & drawing skills ready to explain what you need.

I've been learning chinese, and from the experience I can tell you that in chinese,  when you (-think-) you said something like:

"I'd like to buy a silicon transistor. Do you have any?"

it can be understood as anything from:

"I've just made a huge kaka right overthere and I need some toilet paper. Have some?"

to

"You are very pretty. Wanna merry me?"

Was a joke, of course, but close to reality...  Anyway...

Hope you're going to write us about you experiences over there.

Bai bai,

Cool. i will be living in Hsincu, not far from Taipei. My problem is that I'm a complete newb. And I really mean that, when most people say newb, they mean beyond me. I have never built anything electronics wise, nor repaired anything. But I'm looking to get started, and I figured I might be able to pick up some cheap electronics while I'm there. I might have some questions while I'm there. Would I be able to get your email address? You can just email me at ryanscissorhands@hotmail.com if that's ok.

And, yes, I'm teaching English. Sort of. I don't have a job yet, but as you say, everyone teaches english. That's because there are tons of jobs. What are you doing there. . . teaching English?

Anyway, thanks for responding. I figured there might be someone there.

Hello again!

I think we even had a Taiwanese guy here, don't know if he frequents this forum anymore, tho'..

I just spoke to a friend who cycled around Asia (including Taiwan) & he said, the main problem was that at the (extensive) electronic parts markets, nothing is priced, you have to bargain. And, you have no way (as a non-local) of knowing what the "real" price is.
BTW in mainland china he got some intestinal parasites, and the best he could translate to the local doctor was that he had "snakes"...
