Can anyone recommend a good one? I'm looking to measure Hfe and I've heard that there are some that can tell you what pins are E/B/C on a transistor.  Brand names and models would be helpful, I can do the requisite digging and research after I get some of those.

Thanks!

Thanks, that's a great meter to check out transistors.  I very much appreciate the reference.

Can anyone recommend a good DMM in addition to the meter cited above? I'm looking for something dependable that will last a while.  I know that the Fluke stuff is good, are there any other makes as good?

I received Jameco's catalog a while ago and remember thinking that  this meter was a good deal.

Cool meter! 8) Thanks for the link!

Here's a capacitance meter if you want to measure caps down to 1pf. It also does inductance too, if you want to try making your own wah inductors.

Here's a capacitance meter ($29.95) without the inductance. I have this one and it's nice if you dont care about inductance. Covers the whole range down to 1pf  also.

Circut Specialists gives you a free DMM with orders over $50, but they change the model of the freebie all the time.

I bought an auto-ranging DMM from Sears for about $79 with the features I wanted. Probably made by Fluke anyways. Doesn't do hfe, but I have another that does.

Jason, that's a nice meter, does the whole range of caps too.

The only thing that would deter me from buying the meter I posted (this meter) is that it is not an auto ranging meter, you must set the range (mA, A, mV, V..) manually...not a big deal, I'm just spoiled. The data log feature would be cool 8)

Auto ranging is nice but Auto Power Off is a must for any new test gear IMHO.  This feature will save you $$$ in the long run.

Thanks for all the great info! There's a lot of good leads here, no pun intended....
