I have an old coronet spring reverb amp that also has tremelo built in.  it has 2 jacks on the front to connect footswitches to turn them on or off.  when i had a look inside there is only one wire going to each footswitch jack, and it connects to the ground part of the jack.  I want to build a footswitch for my amp, and was just wanting to know what kind of switches I would need.  Would a couple of simple on/off switches work?

thanks in advance

Try an SPST for each, that might do it.

Plugging in a cable...one bare de-insluated end, the other with a mono plug...Assuming the amp's effect on off switch jack is a mono...[if it's stereo, simply plugging in a mono pplug should turn off/on the 'other' effect]...since you said two jacks were assuming they're both mono jacks.
Now, with the de-insluated, two conductor cable [doesn't have to be shielded] 'plugged in...connect and disconnect the bare ends of the two conductor cable...the effect should turn on and off.
If not...theres a problem with the switching inside the amp.
All these outbaord switches do is short to ground or not. When working...With the ground made, the effect will be in the other [say..off] state, ground lifted will put it in the [say..on] state.
The other jack probly works the same way/
Since one ground is needed for each switch, a stereo jack and cable could be used to connect both [footswitch short to ground] switches with one cable and jack.
Find the ground [sleeve ring or tip]...the other two short to ground to make a complete circuit or not [footswitch] turning the effect on or not...on's and off's states may vary between ground made and ground lifted.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
