Two weeks ago I blew up something in my amp, and had to send it in to the tech. I posted here about it so I thought I should update... Got the amp back from the shop today and It sounds really killer  . It turns out that I blew up the reverb driver and my trem driver tubes. Also I blew up the speakers. I replaced the tubes and the speakers, and had the shop do some maintenence on the boards and fix the trem circuit (which hasn't ever worked for me). Finally, I had dying power tubes, so I had those replaced and rebiased while it was in. So in the end, I guess it was all gravy.

 Wow, I remember when you blew it up. You did a number on it huh?  How often do you play on that amp? When I was playing out on a regular basis a few years ago I made sure I replaced my tubes every 8 -12 months - that may have been slight overkill at times but I never had any problems with the amp. Glad everything is OK now.

Glad you're back in business! :D

With new tubes, speakers, and a re-bias that must be like a new amp.  8)

Thanks again for being my "amp support group." It really rocks to be able to talk to people who are able to understand where I'm coming from on the music basis, and who are more technically adept than I currently am.

Al, I play this amp about 2 hours a day after school and before work (im a colleges student). I don't know the last time those tubes were replaced either... I bought it 15th hand last june (hmmm... 1 year aniversary :P ) Im hoping this setup will last me for a while now.

Jd, I got some mojo speakers for it, they sound really good. If you aren't familiar with them they are an American made take on celestion style speakers. I stuck in a pair for a total of $150.

It does indeed sound like a new amp (as in not used-new, but not like modern-new)! I took it in to http://solidbodyguitar.com/ and they deal in vintage amps and guitars. When I plugged in there in the store it sounded just as good as the real 58 bassmans -different, but just as good.

I hear George Washington's axe was much better after he had the head and the handle replaced...

I thought Goergy Played one of those guitars without a Headstock ?

Last time I saw him on tour (the Where's my teeth? tour) he had switched to a LesPaul for most of the 1st set then he picked up an SG for the second set. I think the previous album was all from his Steinberger days.

hal, the reference to the headstock and handle thing is that mr. Ge Whiz is saying (fairly accurately) that I had the entire amp redone... new amp. Different tubes, different speakers, it is pretty different.

The important thing though, is that it sounds like it was meant to sound. The tubes are important, but I got the same brands, and just had them properly maintained. As for the speakers, the previous ones were really not very good, and could have stood for an upgrade anyway.
