Deep Blue

A while ago, I built a Tube Screamer.  At first, it didn't work, so I sent it off to someone I met on this board who fixed it for me.  It sounded and worked great for a few months, but recently it started acting up.  Bypass mode and the LED work, but I don't get any signal when the effect is on.  I'm pretty certain someone may have tried to use the wrong kind of adapter on it at least once.. Could that have fryed something on the board?

At the moment, I don't have a soldering iron (mine broke) or a multimeter (also broke) so I'm not quite sure what to do.  Should I try swapping the IC chip?

check in/out connections with magnifying glass.

chack power supply (9V?) connections with magnifying glass.

if it aint broke, don't fix it.
if it IS broke,  & no soldering iron........  :-(

did the person that fixed it tell U what the original problem was???

All of the connections are fine...  And yes, it's nine volt.  No loose wires or bad soldering or anything.

The original problem was a bad IC chip combined with extremely poor original contruction (it was my first attempt at building a pedal :) ).

Yup. Pretty much any polarized component or semiconductor.

There very little you can do with no meter and no soldering iron - as you know. You might get lucky easter-egging for a busted chip. Maybe.

The real way to fix it is to (1) get a working multimeter (2) Measure the DC voltages on the opamp pins (3) from that isolate which one(s) of the opamps are sitting at the wrong voltage (4) fix accordingly.

Failing that, I would get a working soldering iron and replace all the electro caps, ICs and transistors.

Failing that, prevail on your friend again.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
