9v adapter plug

I have a female 9v adapter with three prongs one is + I guess but does this need to be grounded? or is one of the prongs for a - connection?
It is for a mouser part number

man we get this a lot lately...

It's a switched socket.  One pin is permanantly connected through.  the other two pins are connected together when there is NO jack in the socket; they disconnect when a jack IS in the socket.

This allows the action of inserting a jack to disconnect the battery supply, and connect the external supply.

A few seconds with a continuity tester on a multimeter will tell you which pins are which.

In fact, if you look carefully at the link you provided, it provides the answer for you.  Look at the second drawing down on the left side.

Can sombody point to a good diagram where the pins are listed? This thread should go the FAQ because it is something that most people deal with on every build with a power jack.

Ahhh.... I think there is more than one kind of power switched socket, so a diagram won't really help, unless it has a specific part number beside it.
