Hi Folks -

I'm relatively new to the world of stompbox building, and I'd like to start making my own PCB's. I have a couple of questions. If anyone would be kind enough to help me out with some answers, I'd greatly appreciate it.

1. Copper-clad boards - what specs should I be looking for? Thickness, one-sided or two, etc.

2. Where is a good place to buy the correct boards?

3. What size drill bit is typically used for drilling the holes on the board?

That's about it for now. Thanks in advance for any help!

Get 1/16" (0.062", 1.6mm) thick glass epoxy, either FR4 or G10. Avoid paper-epoxy or paper phenolic.  Get single sided, as almost every beginner's boards are single sided, and you'll just have to etch the second side away every time.

The holes ought to be 0.030" for almost everything in IC's, transistors, resistors and caps unless you get a bigger part. 0.042 to 0.062 (that 1/16th again) are OK for bigger parts and wires going off-board.

Where to get it? Board stock is where you find it. Hit google and check the electronics surplus places.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks for that info R.G. it's a big help.

This site seems like a good deal for the "FR-4" boards in comparison to most prices I can find:

Am I right? Is this a good deal? $5.50 for a 9"x12" single sided sheet?

Thanks again -
