Finishing boxes and applying decals

Ok I used to be happy just having my pedals sitting in their bare aluminium cases but now I think it's time to make them look a little more interesting. So here are some questions:

1. What paints are good to finish them with?
2. Are there any tutorials for painting them anywhere?
3. How do you guys apply your artwork to them?

This last point has got me confused as how you would get say white writing onto a black painted stompbox (printers don't print white?). The only thing I can think is to brint onto some white decal paper the black around the writing and then stick that on?
