DIY multimeter?

Hey guys...

I'm building a synthstick and need to check if my vhs tape conducts however i have no multimeter...

Is there anything i can use to check if the slightest bit of current is passing through the tape for now until i buty a multimeter?

Also, is there any other materials I can use instead of tape to use as the resistor? I don't know... are there adhesive carbon strips out there???

You could use a battery and an LED.

You could omit the LED and use your tongue.......

You can make a useful "audible" resistance tester from a 555, just use any 555 osciullator circuit & replace the variable reistor (that changes the frequency) by the "mystery " resistance to be tested. Comparing wityh a few known resistors will get you in the ballpark.
Plus, it makes an amusing "hands on" theremin!

if you're gunna make the synthstick anyway, build the circuit, with a pot in place of the "stick" part.  Once its done, and known good, remove the pot, and put the stick in its place - to see if it works.
