How do I bias a transistor for slight gain?

Hey all,
I built an effect that has a slight volume drop.
I don't want to mess with the effect this time, just want to add a transistor
on the output and increase the gain by about 30%.
I tried breadboarding an NPN, using various bias arrangements (resistors and pots) but can't tweak more than 1-1 gain out of it.
How is this done?
Many thanks

Maybe use a FET stage without decoupling cap. FETZER type without the cap from source to ground.

How about the volume recovery stage of the big muff? It's right after the tone control.

Thx RDV!!

I tried it, it works good..gain of around 4
Now I wonder what I did wrong..I did try the same bias arrangement, but I think I had the base biased at too high of a DC voltage, causing the trans to saturate or something before i could crank up the gain high enough  (or something like that)
Thx!
