Here are my two cents:

1) The LBM schem looks odd because the first opamp provides roughly 5 times (14 dB) of gain, so in bypass the actual output would be much more than unity !?

2) The three series diodes are good candidates to be replaced by LEDs:

- Mod #1: Replace each group of three LEDs by a red LED, so it'll have roughly the same dropout voltage (around 1.8V).

- Mod #2: Same as above, but only replace one string of diodes with a LED.

- Mod #3: Replace one grupo with a red LED and the other with a green LED (for around 2.2 V drop).  This will introduce some assymetric clipping.
