Im interested in building a DIY wah pedal from the smallbear expression pedal. What would you all recommend?
I want it to have 'variable-Q'.
Are there any other settings a wah pedal can have?
Thanks for your help.

(PS. No "the search button is your friend" quips :icon_biggrin:)

colorsound inductorless is a good one to build. put an 1K pot between the emitter of the transistor and ground and you have a Q control. the twin-t network has a T made of 2 180K resistors and a 15nF cap that goes into a 33K resistor to ground. replace the 33K with a 47K pot for a resonance control.

you could also try the filter part (not modulation since this would be your wah rocker) of the slackfilter (oh yes, do a search for that :p)

what about tonepad...it should be like crybaby

Yeah I think ill go with the tonepad one, looks fairly good and has volume pedal and variable Q options.

Or check out GGG wah. It should be like tonepads, just with pads for mods (you can use more caps and up to two inductors)

As much as I like TonePad's layouts - I would vote for the GGG Modable Wah as well!  I have read that the volume option on the TonePad one doesn'really work that well - any other comments on that?

I see, does the GGG version sound better?
Also, what do you all use for the inductor. Ive heard that an audio transformer coil works well, and I certainly dont intend to shell out on a fasel thingymajig.

OK, you get an even earlier quip. Have you read "The Technology of Wah Pedals" at GEO ( http://www.geofex.com)?
Read that, then come back with questions.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

i have to agree that article is pretty much the bible for wahs... it doesnt ness have all the schematics but it DEFF gives u amazing insight.. look on my other post about my expresion pedal dream thing... thats how i got most of those ideas... check out some wahs honestly... goto guitar center, play a vox, play a crybaby, play a morley, play a crybaby dime version, play as many as you can.. you have to feel the difference its not a BEST scenario.. most people love the vox v848... i never use mine, im building a wah just to get everything i want.. and ill probably end up using some features of the DIME wah (boost, switch in diff caps, etc) but with more of the Bad Horsie 2 style actual Wah-ing circuit.. i wouldnt say listen to mp3s online either... again why im building mine is because partially that i hate the crybaby vox design as you dont get the full rotation out of the most vital part.. its a half ass-ed design.. thats why the color sound wah is also intriguing... check this page out too http://www.diyguitarist.com/DIYStompboxes/DIY-Wah.htm

he build 2 from scratch... pretty damn good build, the 2nd one is plastic.. i wouldnt bther even trying that... too many hassles.... but for the metal one the only thing i dont like is that he put the fulcrum in the center... my favorite shell is the morley shell because look at how its designed.. better yet.. go try one.. it was designed around the human foot. its perfect.  i scored my morley wah shell for like 10 bucks.. it was busted... :) i love trashed pedals :) any one everyone send em my way hahaah

Anybody ever tried one of the AREA 51 wah kits? How'd you like it?

yeah that pedal he built was pretty good... I dont have the tools though... i was gonna build one myself from wood... but buying in this case is more time/money efficient

Yeah, its OK RG ive already read that one and all the others. He writes some good stuff that guy. Just making sure I didn't miss anything good anyone knows about.
