hi,
i'm building an electro-harmonix lpb2. i cannot get any of the transistors listed on various schematics on the internet. which would be the best alternative, i have found a transistor which i think might be good but i don't know. its a BC875 NPN transistor & has a hFe value of 1000. would the hfe value be too high, what effect does this value have on the sound of a pedal. any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

Use the BC549C. It's cheap and easy to find.

i found a place here that has it, thanks.
how does the hfe value affect the sound?

Not a super pronounced differnce in tone with different transistors.
Over an Hfe gain of 'x' the resistors set gain IIRC>, lower noise is nice tho, and low noise transistors may give lower noise performance.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

What the hell, mount a socket and try every transistor you can find till one sounds the way you want.

btw: the BC875 is a Darlington transistor.
might not work very well.

these will all work....

2N3904
2N2222
2N5089
NTE47
MPSAO5
2N173

and all of 'em will sound a bit different...some will give more boost than others as well...also, if youre gonna experiment with different transistors, id recommend using trimpots on the collector and emitter....
